Burgers & Cupcakes on 9th Avenue by 35th Street - New York City's Best
Mitchel London is a chef and a caterer who understands that his customers want excellent food at reasonable prices. At Mitchel London's Burgers & Cupcakes, for instance, you can order his perfect hamburger (rare to well-done) for a mere $5.95, in a pleasant, clean, coffee-shop atmosphere.
I've been a fan of London for ten years, ever since discovering his almond brioche ($1.75), which I'd pick up for breakfast prior to visiting the Jacob Javitz Center. That almond brioche alone is worth traveling to New York City to taste. With coffee, it provides the proverbial "ohmahgawd" experience.
Well, in addition to juicy burgers and brioche, you should also make a point of eating his fresh cupcakes that have just enough buttercream or chocolate ganache. London's chocolate ganache frosting, in fact, is among the best in town and for $2, you receive an entire cupcake, not just a single, one-inch square of gourmet chocolate.
The quality of my many meals there has been consistently excellent. Waitress service is leisurely (you'll never be pushed out the door). If you must rush, mention your needs, or order take-out at the cash register.
So, what could be better than consistently excellent food? Well, if you are on a budget, you'll appreciate the prices: burger ($5.95), huge order of fries ($2), flavored fries ($3-$4), rings ($3.50), cupcakes ($2-$3). Prefer a salad? Even that's terrific ($3.50).
The cafe is located between 35th and 36th Streets on 9th Avenue, (near Macy's, Madison Square Garden, and B&H Photo). It's open 8AM to 8PM, but may be closed on holidays. 212 643-1200.
PS: This restaurant is not associated with one by same name on 23rd Street. Similarities exist, but the partnership ended and the food is different.
As of July 27, 2007, Mitchel London opened a gourmet pizza shop next door. Decorating radiates "carryout joint," plus ten tables. The pizza is thin, crispy, attractive, and highly gourmet ($8 for a small pie). Consider eating your pizza here, then going next door for fresh, moist cupcakes and coffee.
